Zagatala is a charming small city in the far northwest of Azerbaijan. Nestled at the foot of the Greater Caucasus Mountains with plenty of rivers, valleys and forests, the city is surrounded by beautiful scenery which is ideal for relaxing, walking and hiking, especially in the warmer months. For history lovers there is one must-see sight: the Zagatala Fortress, which is located in the city centre and long served as a Russian imperial military garrison. Nearby more history awaits in lovely rustic villages like Jar and Gabizdara. The region is also renowned for unique dishes including Girs dumplings and Mahara pancakes.
